Ph.D Admission: an overwiew
The programme aims at training creative and competent scientists in the fields of Chemistry and Materials Science through the developement of a solid theoretical background and original research skills.  Original research, performed under the direction of an academic supervisor, plays a pivotal role in this programme. The thesis research helps the student to develop research skills, critical judgment, originality, and independence. Research areas  span contemporary subfields, including theoretical, organic, inorganic, physical chemistry, materials science and more.  Cross-disciplinary collaborations and industrial partnerships are key features of this doctoral programme, with a focus on bridging the gap between academia and industry.

Our doctoral programme admits students directly after Master degree. The duration of the programme is 3 years, and admission is on a competitive basis. The programme is entirely in English.

The PhD program in Chemical and Material Science has an expected length of 3 years including several months spent abroad in the foreign Partner institutions. Admission is by competition with no age or citizenship limits, to all those who already hold a 4 to 5 years degree or similar academic title awarded abroad which has been recognized as equivalent to an Italian degree by the Teaching Committee responsible for the entrance examinations. Competitions are held annually, with details being published within the Summer of each year. Most available positions are supported by scholarships from the University of Torino or from other institutions. The annual scholarship amounts to around 13,638 euro. For periods of study abroad (up to 18 months) the scholarship value is increased by 50%.

The successful candidates will be able to choose a Principal Supervisor and select the subject of the project. Students from all countries are invited to apply.

Every year a Call for Admission is issued, stating the number of available positions and scholarships. Some of the scholarships will be reserved to foreign candidates.

The entrance test (which usually takes places in September) consists of an oral interview aimed at establishing the ability of the candidates to develop a research project, chosen among those available in the call.
Scholarships for foreign candidates are awarded on the basis of their CV and presented research projects.
The successful candidates will be able to choose a Principal Supervisor and select the subject of the project. Students from all countries are invited to apply.

The essential purpose of PhD training is a period of 'apprenticeship' in research with the graduate student working, to begin with, with an experienced supervisor, before becoming more self-reliant and eventually being able to write a thesis independently that is based on the student's own work. The second purpose of PhD training is that students should acquire many personal and professional skills, which are necessary not only for their research, but also to form the basis for the development of their future careers. Ph.D students are required to acquire full knowledge of the scientific literature relating to the research project and critical capacity in the interpretation of experimental results which will allow them to organize and develop their research project.Students are required to participate to courses, seminars and conferences relating to the research and to national or international congresses and Ph.D. schools.  Every year all the PhD students will be evaluated through a written report and an oral presentation of their research progress in front of the PhD tutor committee. Students are strongly encouraged to have research period or stages in foreign University.

At the end of the Ph.D. program each student is required to submit the final thesis written in English that will be considered by the supervisory committee prior to the defense. Final exam committee will specifically include 2 field expert for each candidates. The final defense will be in the form of a seminar given in English with a thorough question and answers session at the end of each presentation.
