Eco-Sustainable friction materials for electric mobility: improvement of tribological properties and sustainability guided by Life Cycle Assessment

The automotive industry faces substantial sustainability challenges, with a focus on reducing emissions, resource depletion, and energy consumption. While electrification efforts are expected to cut pipeline emissions, impacts from materials production are forecasted to be a significant portion of life-cycle emissions by 2040: the understanding emissions of vehicles components, like brake pads, is essential for decarbonization.

This research project targets the development of composite materials for friction brakes with low environmental impact. The modellization of a detailed Life Cycle Assessment will guide the selection of material that will be further investigated to respond to technical requirements of the development of a brake pad.

The research project has been co-financed by the PON D.M. 1061 scholarship in collaboration with ITT Friction Technologies.
