REMOTE TEACHING: In concurrence with the COVID-19 emergency, and in compliance with the relevant dispositions of the Ministry and of the University, the course is offered in remote teaching mode for the whole period in which in the University structures will be closed to public access. The remote teaching will be delivered with streaming videos on the Webex platform in concurrence of the dates and times reported above. Subsequently, the recorded videos will be downloadable from the course webpage.

Learning assessment methods

The final exam will consist in a powerpoint-style presentation delivered by the student, in wihch one (or more) of the topics treated in the course will be expanded, possibily in connection with the research topics followed by the candidate during his PhD course.

In preparing his presentation, the candidate will have the possibility to refer to both the lecture notes provided by the teachers and integrative articles from the state-of-the-art literature in the field.

After the presentation (of the duration of approximately 20-30 min), an open discussion will follow between the candidate and the teachers, which will determine the exam outcome (pass/reject).

REMOTE EXAMS: in concurrence with the COVID-19 emergency situation, and in compliance with the rectoral decree rep. 1097/2020 of 20/03/2020, the exams will be organized with the above-described modalities, by adopting the Webex tele-conference platform. In particular, the evaluation commission will be composed by both teachers, and at least one student will participate as witness.

Program

The course treats the fundamental concepts on the use of techniques based on energetic ions (keV-MeV energies) for the characterization and modification of materials and devices. Some case studies will also be discussed. In particular, the 4 2-hours lectures will be structured as follows:

  • lecture #1 - 1h (E. Vittone): introduction to Ion Beam Based Techniques; basic instrumentation
  • lecture #2 - 1h (E. Vittone): MeV ion/matter interactions
  • lecture #3 - 1h (E. Vittone); Introduction to the SRIM computer code
  • lecture #4 - 1h (E. Vittone): Ion Beam Analysis Techniques: Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS),  Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE)
  • lecture #5 - 2h (P. Olivero): ion beam microscopy: basic concepts and experimental techniques
  • lecture #6 - 2h (P. Olivero): ion beam lithography: ion beam fabrication and single-ion doping

REMOTE TEACHING: The program of the course is unchanged
