This course is intended to provide an overview on scientific and technological issues concerning glasses.

General knowledge about the glassy state of matter, types of glasses, technology issue in production, properties.

A written test consisting of three questions will be provided. The answers should be sent to the teacher's mailbox within a week after the end of the course.

Lecture notes in the form of powerpoint files will be uploaded for access.

Definition of non-crystalline solids and glasses. 
The structure of glasses: short and medium range order.
Glass-forming liquids and the glass transition: thermodynamic and transport properties.
Conditions for vitrification: nucleation and growth of crystals. Synthesis and production of glasses.
Structural relaxation in glasses.
Selected properties of glassy materials: mechanical, thermal, optical, electronic properties.
