This course provides an overview of the reactivity, properties, and structures of organic radicals, with a focus on organic synthesis and environmental aspects.

  • Structure of radicals: carbon- and heteroatom-centered radicals

  • Radical ions: distonic radical ions; diradicals

  • Methods of formation: abstraction, homolysis, single-electron transfer (SET)

  • Gas-phase reactivity: principles and representative examples

  • Solution-phase reactivity: principles and representative examples

Learning assessment methods

The exam will consist of an in-depth analysis, supported by a short presentation (10 minutes). In preparing the presentation, candidates may refer to both the lecture notes provided by the lecturers and supplementary state-of-the-art articles from the scientific literature in the field.
